Be part of the Kiwanis Team—make a difference to the kids in our community!
Who
we are
Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world through service to children and communities.
Kiwanis originally started in Detroit, Michigan, in January 1915. The second chapter was established in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, one year later, making Kiwanis an International Organization. The local chapter Sierra Oakhurst Kiwanis was established in 1958.
Our motto is Serving the Children of the World.
Locally, the Sierra-Oakhurst Kiwanis provides the following:
Christmas with Santa at the Oakhurst Community Center
Kiwanis Corner in the Oakhurst Library
Mini-Grants for our area teachers. This allows local teachers to request funding for science projects, art programs, musical instruments, and sporting equipment not provided by the local schools.
Scholarship funds to graduating seniors from our local high schools.
We need your help! Our next fundraising event will be March 14, 2026. Kiwanis will host a dinner, opportunity drawing, and Bingo at the Oakhurst Community Center. We need prizes, and Gift Certificates from our food service donors, and cash sponsors.
We are a 501c3 – 0216530.
Student Scholarships
Sierra Oakhurst annually presents to area high school seniors, $1,000 scholarships. Applications are available through their counselors. All applications are reviewed by a club committee and granted on a competitive basis. The criteria are; need, scholarship, leadership (Key Club members get extra consideration), and academic pursuit (STEAM). One scholarship may be split for occupational career training.
Mini Grants
Sierra Oakhurst mini-grants are awarded to elementary teachers of the eastern Madera county school districts. Applications are sent to school principals, usually in November. Teachers then submit their individual request to the club, either in writing or electronically. We try to fund, at least partially, all requests. Usually, we limit the amount to <$1,000, but there have been exceptions. Request for computers, desk tops or tablets are not considered. Materials, (books, art supplies, PE equipment), programs (electronic or printed), field trips, performing arts have been granted. Musical instruments are usually beyond our means, but repairs have been granted.
